The Parent Education Program is a prevention based program geared at meeting the needs of parents interested in enhancing their parenting skills by offering positive parenting classes free of charge to the general public throughout the year. This program also offers specific classes, as requested, on a fee for service basis to interested groups, agencies, etc. in Yorkton and the surrounding area.
Following is a list of the multi-class programs we offer:
ACTIVE PARENTING TODAY This six week program is dedicated to the basics of parenting children ages two to twelve. Parents will develop an understanding of why children behave the way they do and help develop skills such as active listening, building self-esteem and encouraging good behaviour.
ACTIVE PARENTING OF TEENS This six week program deals with the many aspects of living with teenagers in today's changing world. Parents will learn some active parenting skills that will make life more enjoyable for them and their teenagers.
FAMILIES IN ACTION This six week course is for parents and their teens or preteens. While the parents are learning valuable parenting skills in one room, the teens/preteens are learning communication and negotiating skills in another.
HOW TO TALK SO KIDS WILL LISTEN AND LISTEN SO KIDS WILL TALK This six week program is on communication, encouragement, building self-esteem and alternatives to punishment. Parents will learn new ways to talk and listen to their children.
NOBODY'S PERFECT This six week program is designed specifically for young parents with children under five years of age. This course helps parents learn more about the physical health and safety of their children, the emotional health and behaviour of their children and helps parents feel more confident in their ability to be a good parent.
POSITIVE DISCIPLINE A misbehaving child is often a discouraged child. This six week program will help parents learn positive discipline skills that will replace old habits and encourage mutual respect which will bring them and their children closer.
THE FIRST FIVE YEARS This six week program is designed for the parents of infants and toddlers and also for expectant parents. Topics include the dangers of shaking and hitting an infant, what to do instead and how to use discipline with love.
Positive Parent Presentations Offered- all of the following presentations are designed for a two hour time period and are delivered by trained (Saskatoon Adlerian Society) parent education facilitators:
Communication is Crucial - This presentation includes a 19 minute video, discussion and handouts that explain the importance of good communication skills in families. It puts forth three goals for parents to keep in mind and offers eight practical suggestions that will help parents improve communications with their children.
Discipline Makes the Difference - This presentation includes a 19 minute video, discussion and handouts that explain the difference between discipline and punishment and offers a variety of straight forward techniques for parents to use with their children.
Good Discipline, Good Kids - This presentation includes a 42 minute video, discussion and handouts that provides parents with positive, constructive ways to encourage cooperation and good behaviour, use alternatives to punishment, help children deal with anger and learn how to problem solve for themselves.
Help Your Child Succeed in School - This presentation includes a 44 minute video, discussion and handouts that provide parents with skills that can help children deal with negative feelings about school, become motivated to achieve better grades and gain the self esteem to deal with difficult situations.
Keeping Peace at Home - This presentation includes a 38 minute video, discussion and handouts that present a range of conflict management skills and strategies that are designed to promote respect, cooperation and successful communication.
Self-Esteem is the Key - This presentation includes a 18 minute video, discussion and handouts that show the importance of self esteem in a child's life. The presentation shows how what we say and how we sat it affects our children and offers ten practical suggestions for enhancing self-esteem.
Stop Struggling with Your Child - This presentation includes a 30 minute video, discussion and handouts that offer a number of tips on how to help minimize family conflict and sibling rivalry and how to maximize a child's self esteem.
